highlights from a great year with many wonderful people, events and programs!

Art at the Park
– Over 225 people participated. Pictured here we are making Christmas
Centerpieces at the Gardens with Carl Curnutte. We will be visiting the NC
Aquarium and enjoy at a tour and engage in a seaweed marbling class.

GEM DCAC Art Classes with
the Dare County Arts Council Artists ~ GEM participants enjoyed a series
of classes with local artists; Fay Davis-Edwards, Laura Howard, Ginny Flowers, Martha
Butcher, Monroe Bell and Carol Jones.

Candlelighting at
St. Andrews by the Sea we enjoyed music with the Outer Banks Chorus, Echoes of
Heritage, Nick Hodsdon, Joe Heard, Nancy Byrne and Angelo Sonnesso. We thank
Jackie Butcher and her friends from Community Homecare & Hospice for the
delicious treats!

Memory Screenings
at the Community Care Clinic of Dare, thank you Rick Grey and Tami Montiel. We
screened 52 people with 27 requiring further evaluation. Thank you GEM Board
Members Cathy Pfendler, RN, Nancy Kosanovich, NP, retired, and Mary Ellen

Lunch & Learns great
speakers and topics thank you Dr. Petzing, Ron DeVeau, PC, and Ellie
Ward, RN for great information. Join us on the third Thursday at 12:30 at the education
room, Sentara Kitty Hawk

GEM’s Caring TEEN’s Program partnered
with Bonnie Bennett’s Friends of Youth and the Dare County Center.
The youth and their mentors learned about dementia and created a holiday cards
with the seniors. The youth expressed surprise that the seniors could do so

GEM coordinated the
showing of Still Alice
at the KDH Movie Theater with
the generous support of the OBX Hospital and Chris Sawin of the Dare County
Arts Council. We thank Tess Judge who moderated and our panelists: Kaye White;
Tami Montiel, RN; Roisin McKeithan, MD; Lynne Raisor and Carol Meyer, RN
retired who answered the audience’s questions after the movie.

Dementia Education
~GEM’s Executive Director, Gail Sonnesso, MS, QDCS teaches:

Memorycare 101; Caring for a person living with memory loss at College
of the Albemarle. Our next class will be offered in February 2016.


in this class will learn from DVD and discussion about the work of Dr. John
Zeisel, an innovator in non-pharmacological approaches to treating Alzheimers
Disease. February 11th at 7pm All Saints After Dark


How do we get there from here?
People living with
dementia might benefit from a different approach to get them moving, learn how!
